Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between network and broadcast addresses?
The network address identifies the subnet itself and the broadcast address sends to every host in it - neither can be assigned to a device. Usable hosts are everything in between.
Why does /24 give 254 hosts instead of 256?
A /24 has 256 total addresses, but the network address and broadcast address are reserved, leaving 254 usable for devices.
